PhotoThe speaker at the March 13 Rotary Club of Kirksville meeting was Richard Yampanya. Richard, who is of Congolese birth, came to this country without his family in 2010 as part of the Diversity Immigrant Visa program, also known as the green card lottery, a Federal program. He was able to bring his wife, Celeste, and their five children to America four years later. He said his primary reason for wanting to come to America was to provide education for his children which is very expensive in the People’s Republic of Congo. Richard works a 48-hour week at Kraft Foods, earning 10 times what he made as a diplomat in the People’s Republic of Congo. He also works many hours each week for the Community Action Agency where he helps other Congolese individuals, including serving as a translator. He is pictured with Club President Randy Smith (left) who introduced him.
